Chch professor gets medal

Professor W, R. Phiiipson* i • ho recently retired from the chair of botany at the University of Canterbury, has been awarded the Hutton Medal by the Royal Society of New Zealand. The medal is awarded to scientists in appreciation of their research. Professor Phiiipson was bom at Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated a bachelor of arts from Cambridge University in 1933 and doctor of philosophy from London University in 1947. From 1933 to 1935, he did research on the classification of British grass species ati Kew Gardens with a grant from the Department of | Scientific and Industrial Re-j search. In 1935. he was appointed to the department of botany of the natural-history branch of the British Museum. He worked on the classification of flowering shrubs, before being promoted to principal scientific officer of the department in 1948 In 1949 and 1950. Professor Phiiipson led a botanical’ expedition to a previously unvisited peak in the jungles! of eastern Colombia. He was: also a member of an expe-|

dition to Jamaica in 1939. In 1951, Professor Philip-' son was appointed a senior’ lecturer in charge of botany in the former biology depart ment of the University of Canterbury. When biology was divided into two departments in 1954, he became head of the botany department. Professor Phiiipson served as dean of the faculty of science in the mid-19505. He was also on the professorial board at Lincoln College. He retired as head of the botany department earlier this year. Professor Phiiipson is a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and is one of 50 corresponding memIbers of the Botanical Society iof America. He was elected a corresponding member in 1971. He has had a particular interest in the botany of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The Hutton Medal will be ' presented to Professor Philip- ! son by the national president of the Royal Society (Dr R. Ik. Dell)’ at the annual 'chalklin lecture and dinner. I to be held by the Canterbury I branch on October 5.
