Squash victory near for N.Z.
NZPA Staff correspondent Ottawa New Zealand’s hopes of winning the world men’s team squash title today hinge on the outcome of the Pakistan-Great Britain clash in the final round. The kiwis whitewashed Canada, 3-0, yesterday but were beaten, 2-1, by Egypt on Saturday to lose their clear lead in the championship.
I After six rounds New Zeai land, Pakistan and Egypt each have five wins and one loss but in the match tally the Asian side has an edge on New Zealand, with Egypt lying third.
“We should beat Australia,” the New Zealand team manager, Mr Norman Coe, told the NZPA last night, “but the critical match for us is the one between the Pakistanis and the British. “If Britain wins we’ll take the championship, assuming we beat Australia. If Pakistan wins they’ll take the title from us on a count-back. ’ He said that whatever the outcome the New Zealand team of Bruce Brownlee. Howard Broun, Murray Lilley and Neven Barbour had done exceptionally well. “It will be easily our best performance at a world
championship. We’ve never finished better than fifth before.”
In last night’s clash with Canada, Broun and Barbour had runaway wins, limiting their opponents to a total of only 12 points. But Brownlee, the kiwi No. 1, was only a match ball away from defeat before recovering to win in five sets.
Hhe showed the effects of several hard matches earlier in the tournament and his grind in winning the Canadian singles title. The Rotorua player was virtually exhausted last night but fought back gamely from the brink of defeat to wrap up the match. In New Zealand’s Saturday loss to Egypt, Brownlee also appeared jaded and did not display his usual form, bowing to Egypt’s No. 1 G. Awad, in four sets. Lilley was overpowered and Broun was New Zealand’s only winner. In the first set Lilley was hit by his opponent’s racket, losing a couple of teeth and in the final set was hit again, this time near one of his eyes.
The second injury was serious enough for him to be taken to hospital for treatment and he emerged with several stitches.
