U.S. standards as yardstick for N.Z.

Parliamentary reporter United States import standards are being used as a testing ground in a drive to enhance New Zealand’s quality reputation for dairy products and to anticipate new customer demands, says the annual report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Systems being developed by the Ministry’s DairyDivision to meet United States market-entry criteria for dried milk products will enable New Zealand to satisfy the world’s most stringent marketing

specifications, says the report. Measures being employed to further exportproducts stands include extension of laboratory facilities; more intensive product analysis and testing; tighter regulation of plant hygiene; environmental and staff health surveillance; strengthening of factory classification systems; and a national educational promotion to heighten industry awareness of bacterial contamination and its effects.
