Ship set to repel boarders
About 40 anti-nuclear protesters braved yesterday's changeable » eat her and turned out at the Lyttelton container terminal to protest against Australian uranium exports to Europe.
The protest, organised by the Campaign to Oppose Uranium Exports, was aimed at th* 26.M9tonne container vessel Kangourou. She is carrying an unspecified quantity of unprocessed uranium ore. which has a low level of radio-activity, from Australia to Europe. At the first sign of the protesters, who included children, the crew of the container vessel started to raise the ship's gangway. The protesters, however, assembled outside a locked gate leading to the container wharf near the ship, and made no attempt to scale the high fence. They distributed pamphlets — written In French — and. using a loudhailer, a French-speaking protester addressed several of the crew, who watched proceedings from the stem of the ship.
