Pleasant recital
By C. FOSTER BROWNE Students of the University 1 of Canterbury School of : Music gave a refreshing little 1 recital on Tuesday at Ham. I Adrienne Taylor and Julie Coulson played a sonata by Vivaldi for harpsichord and! double bass. The opening largo was dull for the harpsichord part could scarcely be heard and the double bass part lacked much to interest. The second movement had more life in the double bass part. Miss Taylor played commendably in tune, but taken by and large such a performan.ce adds little to the excitement of the day.
A sonata for clarinet and Ciano by Poulenc was played y Emma Bates and Joy Nicol. Poulenc can be relied on for adventurous and strongly individual music, attractive in melody and in harmony.
I Miss Bates showed that she has good control in express sive playing and in producing a mellow tone softly. Her
phrasing was attractive and her use of dynamics arresting and stylish. Miss Nicol played the piano pan showing thoughtful rapport with her fellow artist. She has colourful touch.
David McGregor and Mark Seeker played an interesting arresting Concerto for Flute by Gordon Jacob. Mr McGregor played with flexible control of pleasing tone, sometimes rather more piercing than necessary on strong and high sounds. He showed good breath control in phrasing. Mark Seeker is an impressive and completely dependable player who can produce rich sonorities from a piano and searches successfully for I full musical meaning.
