Commissioner out with bruise

High hopes are held that Commissioner, one of a small pool of open-class horses in Canterbury, will be able to resume racing in the Ashburton Flying Stakes [a fortnight from Saturday. “He has a bruise on a ligament, which showed up after he had raced at trials a fortnight back,” said his owner-trainer, Nat Hall, yesterday. “He’s not sore, but there is some swelling and heat about the bruise. Veterinary advice is to wait until the end of this week before doing anything but jog him,” he added.

Commissioner will also do light stud duty this spring. Last season he covered about 15 mares and it is probable that he will do a like number this year. “I’ve had quite a number of inquiries from owners of mares, but the real object is |to prepare him for the New Zealand Cup and nothing will interrupt that,” said I Hall.
