Quake toll reaches 80
NZPA-Reuter Jakarta The death toll in a powerful earthquake which jolted an Indonesian island chain three days ago has risen to 80, an official spokesman said yesterday. More than 200 buildings and 12 rice granaries were destroyed by the accompanying tidal waves which swept the coastal areas to the islands of Sumba. Sumbawa. and Lombok, all east of Java, last Friday, the spokesman added.
A special search and rescue team from Jakarta has arived in Lombok to distribute food and medical supplies to the earthquake victims.
