Youth worker charged

PA Wellington A youth worker charged with communicating with a prisoner in custody has been committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Denis Christopher O’Reilly, aged 25, had appeared in the Wellington Magistrate's Court for the taking of depositions on the charge, which he denies. He appeared before Messrs K. W. Davey and J. M. Flavell, justices of the peace. The charge arises from an incident in Owen Street on August 2, in which O’Reilly spoke to an arrested man in a police car. On a second charge of resisting a police constable, which O’Reilly also denies, he was remanded to the Magistrate’s Court on November 21.

O’Reilly was granted bail of $250 on his own recognisance. The Supreme Court trial will be held on October 31.
