Teachers oppose S.A. tours

Education reporter Wellington The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association opposes sports tours of South Africa, or any other country by New Zealand secondary-school pupils to play racially segregated teams.

This policy was decided by the association at its conference yesterday.

A move to delete the words “South Africa” from motion was lost.

A move to add “or anv other country” to the original motion was passed. After considerable discussion. the amended motion was passed. The senior vice-president. Mr G. Warner, said that some months ago a branch had had referred to it an invitation from the South African Rugby Board to send the Palmerston North Bovs’ High School First XV there to tour. The branch had been split on the issue, and had referred ;it to the executive for a rul|ing.

In the past, the conference had made no decision on the issue, as it was deemed out of the scope and function of the association.

This time, said Mr Warner, there was a definite need for policy, and the conference must make a decision.
