New ground ‘magnificent’ for game

The Linwood Rugby Club’s new ground in Kearneys Road will be used for the first time this week-end when a green-and-black side plays Johnsonville, of Wellington. Linwood has had a 21year association with Johnsonville, and home and away matches have been played regularly. This year’s Linwood team will consist mainly of mature players, and Fergie McCormick will be a popular choice at fullback.

One of McCormick’s Linwood colleagues of the 19605, Brian Mansfield, will referee the match. McCormick, who is Linwood’s club captain, yesterday described the state of the ground as “magnificent.” But it is probable that the official opening of the new ; facility will not be held until the first week in March next year. On that occasion it is likely that a composite Canterbury rugby team will be in action.
