Eight more for ski-ing

Eight more New Zealand racers — four men and four women—have been invited to compete in next week’s Air New Zealand-Mount Hutt international ski-ing series.

This brings the total o local skiers asked to the race up to 30 — but at least fou of them are unlikely to com pete at Mount Hutt. Added to the list are fou Canterbury racers — Debbii Bain, David Cooney, Tim Sheppard and Neil Smith — two North Islanders, Robin Lonsdale (Stratford Mountain Club) and Vanessa Laird (Ruapehu), and Jane Pairman (Otago); and Richard Wells (Southland). In doubt from the initial New Zealand team that was announced last week are the 20-year-old national champion, Brett Kendall (Auckland), Graham Gilkison and Leigh Muschamp. The secretary of the organising committee for the Mount Hutt series (Mr NeiL Harrison) said yesterday that 1 none of the three skiers had| returned their entries at thisi stage. "I can only assume that they will not be com-! peting.” Kendall has not competed | in any of the New Zealand: circuit races this season but is the sort of skier who could probably perform well after a week of hard training — he will be missed but his younger brother, Scott, wall be there to take over tlie mantle. Mr Harrison said it was unlikely that Miss Laird would be able to compete and he had not been able to confirm the entry of Wells. As well, he has been unable to contact Miss Lonsdale but it is quite likely that she will be able to spend a week at Mount Hutt on her way back f ’om the North

sland to the University of Jtago. Preparations for the series ire going well and the course or the spectacular downhill jvent was positioned last Sunday. It is now up to the course setter — who will possibly be the former Canterbury coach, Werner Hanni — to decide where to put the gates. The programme for the eight day series is:— August 29 Monday: Official opening at the Mount Hutt Restaurant, by Sir Henry Wigley; inspection of downhill course and training. August 30: Downhill training.

August 31: Non-stop downhill practice. September 1: Downhill event.

September 2: Men’s Slalom, September 3: Women’s Slalom.

September 4: Women’s giant slalom and first run of men’s giant slalom. September 5: Men’s giant slalom, second run.
