Junior sporting fixtures

Hockey

The Queensland under 12 touring team gave the Canterbury Hatch Cup side a thorough hockey lesson when it recorded a 5-1 victory on a bumpy surface at the Woolston Working Men’s Club grounds yesterday. In general play the Queensland side was far quicker to the loose ball and mounted attacks at a speed which bewildered the home defence.

Canterbury’s play improved in the second half, when it applied considerable pressure. The goalkeeper, Kerry William, was named “player of the match,' by the tourists. For Queensland goals were scored by Murray Fitzpatrick (2), Tony Nelier, Mark Heselwood and Gregory Forbes. Paul Ineson scored for Canterbury from a penalty stroke. A penalty stroke competition will be used to decide the qualifiers from pool D of the Rankin Cup secondary schoolboys’ hockey tournament, being held in Christchurch.

This pool ended with three teams as joint leaders —Burnside High School, Waitaki Boys’ High School and Nelson College. Two other Christchurch teams, Hlllmorton High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School, are already assured of places In the quarter-finals from other pools. This was a particularly good achievement for Hillmorton, as many of its players aie young and relatively inexperienced. Results were:—

A secondary schoolgrils’ hockey tournament continued at Ranfurly yesterday in fine, warm weather. Kaiapoi drew, 1-1, with Aparima and lost 1-9 to Maniototo.

In a secondary schoolgirls’ tournament at Invercargill, Darfield A beat Cromwell, 9-0, and Taieri, 5-1, and the B team beat Bayfield, 5-1, and Southland Girls’ High, 4-1. St Margaret’s beat Gore. 2-1, and Bayfield, 6-0.

Rugby

The South Island under 18 rugby tournament began in Invercargill yesterday. Results were:—

Section one: Southland XV 12, Mid-Canterbury 10; Canterbury 27, Marlborough 13; Otago 24, Southland XV 9.

Section two: Southland 9, South Canterbury 4; Southland 19, North Otago 4; Nelson Bays 67, South Canterbury 0.

Canterbury looks the team to beat in the under 16 SouthIsland rugby tournament being played at Hancock Park, Dunedin. The team easily beat Buller. 20-3, in the opening game. Canterbury later had a hard struggle to beat South Canterbury, 13-11. A last-minute try and a difficult conversion bv Rod Latham grabbed the game for Canterbury’. Other results:—Otago Gold beat Mid-Canterbury, 16-8; Southland beat Mid-Canterburv, 23-0; Canterbury Sub-unions beat West Coast, 38-0; Otago Blue beat West Coast, 56-6; Nelson Bays beat North Otago, 16-0; Marlborough beat North Otago, 32-0.

League

Tennis

The defeat of the top-seeded pair in the under 17 mixed doubles. Clive Coffey and Ann Oughton, added spice to the first day in the Anderson and Hill August tennis tournament at Wilding Park yesterday. Two players participating in their first tournament, Stephen Baird and Carolyn Feary, eliminated Coffey and Miss Oughton in the quarter-finals of the event. But Baird and Miss Feary were subsequently put out in the semifinals by Brian Davidson and Sallv Hughey. The other finalists will be the second seeds, Bruce Logan and Catherine Burke. Results went according to expectations in the under 15 division. Alistair Chapman and Jill Hibbert, seeded first, qualified to play Dean McKinnel and Jane Clarke, seeded second, in the doubles final. Players who have reached the semi-finals of the under 13 mixed doubles event are Scott Pearson and Jan Pickering, the top seeds, and Stuart Thomsett (South Canterbury) and Ann Richards, seeded second. Their rivals are John RolUnson and Sally McCormick, and Tony Musgrave and Cynthia Patterson. Singles play also started yes-

terday, and two rounds of play were accomplished in most divisions.

Auckland had a resounding 49-0 win over West Coast In the national 15-year-old rugby league tournament in Rotorua yesterday. In the other A grade match Canterbury beat Waikato, 28-3.
