Special correspondent New Plymouth ■ The Hawer a-trained Willem Barendsz and the northern visitors, Henton Oak and Clang, are expected to dominate the Newton King Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Taranaki Hunt Club’s meet-i ing at New Plymouth today. ; Willem Barendsz, a consistent performer through the winter, hinted a return to winning form was likelyi when he finished fourth behind a good field at the’ recent Franklin meeting. In similar form, the veteran grey, whose record is better than claimed by most in the field, would win. Clang worked keenly at New Plymouth on Monday morning and after his fair seventh on Saturday he is entitled to respect. Henton Oak and Doux Voleur were observed by the stipendiary stewards to be tn trouble near the turn on I Saturday. Both runners lost ground but the former rallied sufficiently to get fourth and with better luck| this time is obviously going to be hard to beat. Battle Fury failed to flat- 1 ter on Saturday but he was having his first run for sev- • eral weeks and if, as ex-j pected, he is improved by I the outing he could be the one for reasonable odds. Celtic Kathy, a surprising; second favourite on Satur-‘ day, ran a creditable race; and in similar form must be j a chance. Any rain would: bring her right into favour.
