Swim records falls
NZPA-Reuter Mission Viejo Jenny Turrell’s world 1500 metres freestyle swimming record has been broken. Alice Browne, of the United States, set the new record when she won the women’s event in 16 minutes 24.60 seconds at the United States national swimming championships. Miss Browne, 15. beat the Australian’s previous record of 16:33.94 set in the 1974 United States championships at Concord, California. Finishing behind Miss Browne were Jennifer Hooker (16:34 65) and Valerie Lee (16:42.56) of the
United States, Agence FrancePresse reported. Rebecca Perrot (N.Z.) clocked 16 minutes 50.79 seconds to improve on her own New Zealand record by 4.17 seconds when she finished in seventh place in the race. In the women’s 200 metres medley Lisa Curry (Australia) set a new Australian record of two minutes 20 95 seconds, bettering Judy Hudsom’s 1976 mark of 2min 22.47 seconds. Miss Curry took third place in the event behind the American swimmer Tracy Calkins, who set a new United States record of 2mln 19.315ec.
