Alternative to drugs
Sir, — Your editorial (August 19) regarding the poppy cultivation in the “Golden Triangle” of Burma, Laos and Thailand was interesting and timely, since Parliament is soon to consider proposed anti-narcotic legislation. The task of persuading farmers to grow other crops is not easy, and for this reason Trade Aid (N.Z.) Inc. is involved with importing handcrafts from the Thai Hillcrafts Foundation which is a non-profit organisation instigated by Canadian university volunteers, and now supported by both the Thai and Canadian Governments. The foundation endeavours to help the hill tribes to earn an income other than by poppy cultivation through handcraft promotion. — Yours, etc., KEVIN A. O’CONNOR. Trade Aid (N.Z.) Inc. August 22, 1977.
