Children in hospital
Sir, — Congratulations to the North Canterbury Hospital Board for at last providing some form of accommodation for mothers of children in hospital. Having been in hospital at a young age with a mother unable to visit because of transport problems I can sympathise with the children as well as the mothers. Dr Jolly on his recent visit to New Zealand told us his views on how children should be cared for in hospital. By comparison, we seem to treat our children like objects, rather than as immature people. Dr
Jolly’s use of the hospital play room as a sleeping area for mothers at night seems a practical use of limited s >ace in an old hospital. With the low occupancy rate of the nurses’ homes is it not possible to turn one into a children’s hospital with live-in amenities for mothers? — Yours, etc., C. REID. August 13, 1977.
