First wool sale

The first wool sale of the new season in Canterbury yesterday was not the most reassuring start. Prices were not bad — they w'ere in line with those ruling at the close of last season, and not very different from prices a year ago. But the Wool Marketing Corporation made the market. The corporation bid on almost 80 per cent of the offering, and ended with about 38 per cent of the wool passed to it. It could W’ell be the main buyer if. as expected, most growers elect to take the corporation’s offers. For fleece wool, in particular, the corporation seemed to be out in front of the trade, which took up little fleece. There are hopes that before the season has gone far buyers will be able to lift their sights closer to corporation levels. There seems to be little doubt that wool is still w'anted. The start of a new season often involves a settling-in period. Judging from the corporation's offers and limited trade dealings. most fleece is still selling for about 200 c to 250 c.
