Sir Denis opens St John school
PA Auckland A national training school for St John Ambulance officers has been opened in Auckland by the GovernorGeneral (Sir Denis Blundell). The school, m the Pitt Street building which originally housed the Central Auckland Fire Station, was paid for with funds raised I by the first New Zealand Telethon appeal. The chairman of South. Pacific Television (Mr K. G. Fraser) said that the institution was the first visible and physical manifestation of a Telethon appeal. If the St John Ambulance 1 Association was grateful to his channel for being of help to the service, the reverse' was equally true, he said. I The St John Telethon represented the real opening of TV2 and was the event! which put the channel on its feet. Also present at the ceremony was the Minister of Health (Mr Gill), who said that the Government had accepted a commitment to fund the running of the school now that it was 1 working. The Accident Compensation Commission had , been approached and would provide about 535.000 each ; year for training ambulance ( officers at the establishment.
