’Quake toll up to 72

NZPA Jakarta The Indonesian Government said yesterday that 72 people were killed in the earthquake and the ensuing tidal waves which hit last Friday. Helicopters and planes will be employed to reach the victims on the islands affected, a spokesman said. The Social Affairs Minister (Mr M. S. Mintareja) said after his meeting with Phesident Suharto that 70 people died on the island of Sumbawa and two on Bali. The United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) had offered assistance to Indonesia, Mr Mintareja said, but he did not disclose the amount.

The Minister said that the governor on Sumba, the island closest to the epicentre of the earthquake, said there were no casualties there. Scientists put the epicentre about 320 km south-west of Waignapu, the capital of Sumba.

The magnitude of the earthquake was registered by the Meteorological Department in Jakarta at more than seven on the Richter scale, compared with 6.2 on the Richter scale for a previous earthquake on the island of Bali, that claimed more than 500 lives.
