200-mile limit off W. Samoa
NZPA Suva Western Samoa’s parliament has proclaimed a 200mile economic zone around the Samoan Islands, but it will not go into effect until a date is announced by the: Government. The new law sets fines of up to $90,000 and con-1, fiscation of foreign ships, and their catch when viola-; tion of the limit occurs. Meanwhile, Fiji’s cabinet j ■ has ordered drafting of similar legislation. The Prime Minister (Ratu ' Sir Kamisese Mara) said:' that Fiji would claim as its; < economic zone all areas wi-,< thin its group of 350 islands, ( 1 plus a 200-mile zone meas-i, ured from the outermost is-;i lands. He said that a 200-mile zone would also be pro-/ claimed around Rotuma Is-:’ land, about 350 miles norths of Suva, and around Konway i Reef, about 400 miles south-! 1 ivest of Suva. < ____________________ .
