Avalanche study approved
! The Arthur’s Pass National iPark Board has approved a i study of avalanches in the I Upper Otira Valley. The study will Ire made by Dr 1. F. Owen and Dr C. J. Burrows of the University of Canterbury. Aims of the study are to assess the terrain characteristics of avalanche locations, and to investigate the influence of avalanches on vegetation and geomorphological features. The ultimate aim is to extend the findings to a larger area of the national park, possibly on a potential avalanche hazard map.
It is also hoped to establish factors influencing the timing of avalanches in this area.
A grant of $lOOB towards the survey was approved by the park board. Instruments will be supplied by the
university. In a report on the study, Dr Owens and Dr Burrows said that the Upper Otira Valley appeared suitable because of its known history of avalanches. It was easily accessible and observable from the road, and had a considerable though not complete range of aspect variations.
The board considered longterm and short-term improvements to offices in its headquarters at Arthur’s Pass. It was agreed to consult an architect on long-term extension plans for the building. This would include relocation of existing offices and additional space for such facilities as a dark room, storage areas, and toilets. Short-term improvement needs for the office and reception areas will be investigated.
