Yachting title to Pitman

David Pitman, of Britain, won the world contender class yachting championship which ended at Kiel on Saturday, He clinched victory in the championship, in which 56 competitors from 14 nations took part, by finishing second in the fifth and last race. Pitman won the first three races and was placed fifth in the penultimate one. The organisers decided not to hold an originally scheduled sixth race. Under contender class rules, a minimum of four events are necessary for world championships to be settled. Australia and New Zealand yachtsmen provided the toughest challenges for British participants, New Zealander Richard Gladwell finishing third behind Geoffrey Whitfield, of Britain.
Gladwell spearheaded a strong New Zealand challenge, with 24.4 penalty points. Other New Zealanders, Keith Hawkins, Paul Carpenter, and John Elliott, finished seventh, fifteenth, and thirtyeighth respectively.
