Avonside wins table tennis
Avonside 1 kept its two point, lead over Riccarton 1 at the top of the A grade inter-club table tennis competition with a 10-2 win over Selwyn in the sixteenth round of matches. Riccarton stayed in touch with an 8-4 win over the struggling Avonside 11, University beat Avonside IV. 9-3, and Riccarton 11 beat Avonside 111, 10-2. Les Stewart had his most successful rounds for some time for Avonside I. beating both Neville Brightwell, in three games, and Bill Scott in two games. Avonside lost only two doubles matches. Stewart and Harry Redmond lost to Scott and Barbara! Taylor and Redmond and Maurice! Burrowes lost to Scott and! Brightwell. Wayne Adamson and the dependable John Armstrong both won three singles matches for Riccarton I and Colin Tipper, filling in for Stephen Adamson, beat Barry Radford in three games. The Avonside team picked up two consolation doubles matches but Bert Thompson may have had good reason for kicking him-1 self after his singles match with ' Armstrong. [well that it seemed a foregone conclusion that the match would require a third game. Leading, 20-8, Thompson somehow contrived to lose 14 consecutive points to lose the game, 20-22. Weakened by an injury to the Canterbury captain, Yee Chow Boi. University still managed to beat Avonside IV, 9-3, with Richard Tan the pick of players, winning all his singles matches. I Indeed, it was a bad night for j Dixon, who was also beaten by | Quentin Meffin. normally a B I grade player. Michael Hamel led the youthiful Riccarton II team to a surprisingly easy win over Avonside 111. The left-handed Guy Halliburton also recorded three wins while Stuart Armstrong beat Kevin Duffy and the Canterbury selector. Graeme Main.
