Mairehau brilliant to last

Mairehau High School took the Canterbury women's A grade basketball title in brilliant style when it beat Mairehau A, 70-47, at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. The school team kept its opponent at bay throughout the game, and showed the skill to; which its spectators have been: accustomed this season. The prominent Checkers player and former national representative, Sharon Rennell, came to the fore with a series of good shots, and scored 29 points. At half-time Checkers led, 47-24. Denise Mackay (University) played a fine game with good footwork down the court; | she scored 10 points. Rangiora showed a great improvement in team tactics when it beat United, 55-33. Points for Rangiora were evenly distributed, and at halftime it held a 24-16 lead. Kim Smith scored several good long-range goals for Rangiora. Heather Carr was once again the top scorer for United. She was always ready for quick passes, and scored 15 points.
