Air pollution

Sir, — How does John Burn (“The Press,” August 19) know that “the recent day of extreme smog conditions nonetheless disclosed few domestic chimneys smoking? Was a full count made? Even if there was it might merely show that a few smoking chimneys from a few inconsiderate people cause a disproportionate amount of distress and damage. The air pollution committee of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority has shown that winter smoke pollution here is caused largely by domestic fires. Contrary to Cr Burn’s claim, the Ministry of Health agrees with the air pollution committee. Its tardy actions may be due to pressure from uninformed persons. — Yours, etc., D. W. KING. Rangiora. August 19, 1977.
