S.A. sports contacts
NZPA Wellington Sportsmen and sports- '■ omen from 22 countries, including New Zealand, have participated in sporting events in South Africa since December 1. 1976. A list of sporting contacts between South Africa and other countries was supplied by ’he South African ConsulateGeneral at the request of the New Zealand Press Association. Countries other than New Zealand represented by indi- ' iduals or teams which competed in South Africa in this period are; Rhodesia Engand West Germany. United States. Israel. Switzerland Iran Brazil. Portugal. Italy. Australia. Mexico. Sweden Venezuela. France. Spain, anada. Taiwan. Argentina, Denmark, and Costa Rica.
The sports were golf, yachting, athletics, tennis, wrestling, powerboat racing, motor racing, canoeing, horse riding, rowing, and gymnastics, according to the official list. In addition South Africans competed ia other countries as follows: Golf. — United States: Orange Bowl Coral Gables tournament. Swaziland: Kaizer international championships, Royal Swazi tournament. Hawaii: Hawaiian open tournament. Botswana: Pro-am golf tournament. Hockey. — West Germany: Protea men’s and women's hockey tournament. Spain. Gymnastics. — United States: Inter-state championships. Ice skating. — France: Championships.
Angling. — New Zealand: New Zealand tournament. Surfing. — United States: Pro-am surfing competition, California. Rugby. — Israel: Two international matches, university invitation match. Snooker. — United Kingdom: British amateur chain-. pionships. Motor racing. — England: Formula E-race. Argentina: Argentina grand prix. Brazil: Brazilian grand prix. Tennis. — Australia: Toyota international. Costa Rica: Coffee bowl tourna-' mem. United States: 14 events. Golf. — United States?
