"Muldoon’ vouchers

The Mayor of Hamilton (Mr Bruce Beetham) is still determined to try and implement his scheme for rate vouchers, and has even found a name for the vouchers — “Muldoons”— after the man who inspired the idea.

Mr Beetham’s proposal came after the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) had suggested that Mr Beetham print his own money. Mr Beetham said in Christchurch yesterday that there had been a good reaction to his proposal in Hamilton, and if this continued he would assume that there was enough support to put it into force.

The scheme is designed to reduce interest charges

on overdraft money and loans, once the vouchers are in general circulation.

If the support was there he would ask the Treasury if the scheme was legally possible. Mr Beetham said that he thought it was “marginally within the law,” but this might not be so.

If not, Hamilton’s two members of Parliament would be asked to sponsor a local body empowering bilL

Mr Beetham said that his proposal might have a stormy passage through his own council, but he would not move without the support of a good section of the community.
