Special courses for Greymouth pupils

Twenty-four pupils at Greymouth High School will" take an unusual group of subjects at a special series of courses at Inchbonnie. The courses will be a week long, and taken by six post-graduate teachers from the Christchurch Teachers’ College. The teachers are students of inter-disciplinary studies, one of the colleges’s major courses, now in its third year.

,It shows students how to join other teachers in teaching subjects together, and how to design courses in such cases that make full use of an individual’s qualifications and abilities. The six students have graduated in different subjects. They will spend four weeks on the West Coast, two of them at Greymouth High School preparing pupils for the course, and two of them at Inchbonnie conducting the course. Pupils on the course will have the chance to make their own films and audio tapes, study yoga i and dancing, astrology, the t weather, and the geology of the area, meet local craftsmen and artists, do their own catering and cooking, study the area’s songs and folklore, I explore in drama Maori,

Biblical and Greek mythology; and look at the vestiges of Maori settlement and gold and coalmining. Their exercise in catering will teach them the nutritional value of foods, menu improvement, and present them with practical problems. They will have a chance to listen to the sounds of the area and produce a tape that might find its way on to “Sonic Four,” study the night sky, its constellations and satellites; and get a basic grounding in meteorology. The pupils will visit farms, a timber mill, and quartz, coal, and greenstone quarries. Spokesmen from the Forest Service, the Mountain Safety Club, and others will address them. They will start each day with a run, and make a study of the region’s flora and fauna, its early botanists, and effects of settlement and tourism. A two-day tramp is planned in which the group will

learn to make stretchers, ford rivers, administer first aid, and master rudimentary climbing skills. The director of secondary programmes at the Christchurch Teachers College (Mr A. Cargo) said yesterday that integrated studies of this nature were finding increasing acceptance in schools.
