St Bede’s wins, 7-6

The St Bede’s College first XV deservedly won its annual fixture against Shirley Boys’ High School, 7-6 at Richmond Park on Saturday.

M. Meates scored the winning try for St Bede's in the last minute of the game. Earlier chances for St Bede’s had been foiled by good defence and some inept handling. S. Johnston kicked a penalty goal. Shirley’s points came from two penalty goals by its fullback, P. Grigg. J. Luscombe had a great chance to score three minutes from the end, but Meates stopped him inches from the line with a desperate tackle. Shirley, with its captain, D. McLachlan m great form, looked to be in command when it. went to a 6-3 lead midway through the second spell. However, St Bede’s had greater reserves of fitness and it was clearly on top in the final stages.
