Burrell moves up

Wanganui’s wiry fullback, Bob Barrell, continues to move inexorably up the list of first class rugby scorers in New Zealand. With 71 points from eight matches this season, Barrell has moved past Bob Scott and Tony Davies in career aggregates and now threatens Joe Karam, who is seventh with a total of 902 points. Barrell’s 872 points have come from 17 tries, 100 conversions, 195 penalty goals and eight dropped goals. He has topped the century mark in three seasons, and seems certain to achieve the feat again this year. Wanganui has had

frequent cause to be grateful for Barrell’s scoring ability in his 13 years with the team. His long range penalty goals and nippy entrances into the back-line to provide overlaps have helped the team win many tight games. Ironically, when he received a chance to display his wares in a national trial this season, the magic touch deserted him: he kicked only one goal. But the sharp-featured full-back with the forthright approach continues to score so well for his province that he must be seriously considered for a place in the New Zealand team to tour Argentina later this year.
