Battle Fury should score overdue win

Special Correspondent Auckland. Battle Fury, one of the big disappointments of his age, three years, this season, looks set to regain winning form when lie contests the Mannings Quality Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Te Rapa today. After winning four times last season Battle Fury promised to become one of the best three-year-olds. In fact, all he has managed from 24 starts are a second, tw'o thirds and three fourths. Battle Fury was gelded straight after the Auckland Cup meeting and resumed racing in April. In this new campaign he has had nine outings and the last three have brought placings. He ran fourth at Avondale on July 3. finishing extremely well, third there a week later and third at Paeroa last Saturday. All of those races were over 1200 m whereas the distance today is 1600 m, which should be more to Battle Fury’s liking. Stipulwin caused a surprise when he switched from middle distance racing to sprinting and beat Optician at Matamata on July 17. In that form he would be a very hard rival for Battle Fury. Like Battle Fury, Stipulwin ran below expectations in the early part of his second season. He returned to the winning list in the autumn, scoring over 1600 m at both Gisborne and Tauranga. and he was successful again at Rotorua in May. Others entitled to consideration are Heidsieck, Kauere Lad, Jan’s Beau, Waiteti Lass and Brylee. Heidsieck’s last race brought a fourth in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham. Kauere Lad capped a string of seconds with a runaway win over 2200 m at Avondale on July 10. He is a most capable winter galloper, but it is possible he will now find 1600 m too short for him. Jan's Beau ran fourth behind Kauere Lad at Avondale. an effort which raised hopes that a further win or two might be left in him. The latest form of Brylee. another veteran, has been similarly encouraging. Waiteti Lass ran second at Levin last week, but it must be said, seldom runs two races alike these days. Tallfire might be the hardest to beat in the second leg. the 2100 m Fairview Handicap. Bold Warrior. Final Tax and Divine Cloud should give him most opposition. There was some merit in Tailfire’s ninth behind Cattle King and the other leading winter gallopers in the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap last month. Since then he has finished second at Wanganui and seventh out of 19 at Matamata in the race won by Cornelius. Those races should have brought Tallfire. a real mudlark, to his peak. Bold Warrior won a middle distance event at Te Rana in May. He finished well back in Final Tax’s winning race at Matamata but should not be dismissed on that one moderate recent showing. Divine Cloud battled on well for third to Sakata and Nelson’s Order at Paeroa. He has seldom raced poorly in a pretty solid campaign over the last few months.
