Russian outpoints Jackson

I NZPA staff correspondent Montreal David Jackson, of Lower Hutt, put up a game display before losing on points to the Russian “boxing machine” in the second round of the Olympic Games welterweight competition yesterday. Valery Rachkov was the young Russian who beat Jackson, but Russia has power and strength in all classes and probably could have fielded several men to .test the relatively inexperienced young Kiwi.

Jackson staved in the bout until shortly before the end 'of the second round, and if the Russian did most of the attacking. Jackson counterpunched strongly with his right hand and stung Rachkov several times. Rachkov shook Jackson with a heavy punch late in the round, however, and Jackson took two com-i pulsory eight counts in the final round. Neither was a (clean knockdown, the first anpearing to be. largely a Islip, the second doubled Jackson over rather than (putting him down. The Kiwi had absorbed punishment, however, and (the 5-0 unanimous points (decision did ’ not surprise (anyone in the packed boxing (hall. New Zealand’s team manager (Mr Allan Scaife) sa d he was pleased that Jackson .had been able to sting the • Russian, and to keep with (him until the later parts of ithe second round. ,
