F.B.I. joins kidnap hunt
(NZPA-Reuter Madera, California. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the California authorities in a nationwide hunt for two young San Mateo County residents who were allegedly involved in the kidnapping on July 15 of 26 schoolchildren and their bus driver outside Chowchilla, 17 miles north of Madera, the New York Times News Service reports. A third alleged participant, Richard Allen Schoenfeld, aged 22, surrendered on Sat-
urday t.o the Alameda County district attorney, accompanied by his lawyer and his father. He is in custody, pending a hearing on Thursday . in Chowchilla on whether his bail should remain at SUSIM. Still sought are Ered Newhall Woods and James Leonard Shoenfeld, Richard’s brother, both aged 24. An F. 8.1. spokesman in Washington said that the agency's re-entry into the case was limited to the search for the two suspects, who were thought to have fled California.
“We are not in the kidnap-; ping investigation,’’ the: spokesman said. “We are) just looking for the two men. The local authorities are! still running the investigation.” On Saturday, ransom notes) asking for SUSSM were re-1 ported to have been found on the Woods family’s estate! near San Francisco. The young suspect’s father, Fred Newhall Woods 111, owns the Livermore quarry where the children and driver were imprisoned underground in a buried trailervan.
