Coasters visit blind

Five sixth-form pupils from Greymouth High School were in Christchurch on Friday observing aspects of work done by the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind. The group visited the resource centre at Elmwood School for visually handicapped children; spoke with Professor R. S. Clemett, senior lecturer in opthalmology at the

Christchurch Clinical School and to appreciate the mobility of a blind person with a guide-dog, had a tour of the Town Hall accompanied by a blind woman, Mrs D. Beard and her dog, Gypsy. The visit was a result of the interest the pupils had shown in work done with the blind. Next week they will judge a “Braille Week” competition being

run by a Greymouth radio station. From left are Penny Western, Karen O’Donoghue, Jenny Rankin, Daphne Smithers, Edwin Cogger, Mr C. Fisk (assistant branch manager for the foundation in Christchurch), Mrs D. Beard and her guide-dog, Gypsy, outside the Town Hall.
