More help for South Pacific

PA Rotorua The Government has decided to increase its aid to South Pacific countries at the expense of countries "further away,” the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has announced.

In his speech to the National Party conference in Rotorua on Saturday evening he said the time had come for a change in the country’s foreign aid. It was logical that the country should accept more responsibility in the South Pacific and it was a region in which there were more of what he called “our own people.” The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) later declined to spell out details of the proposed changes. He said these would become clear when the Government’s spending allocations were announced in the Budget on Thursday night. It is expected, however, tha; the increased aid to be made available for South Pacific projects will be allo-

cated at the expense of contribution to multilateral aid programmes. International organisations likely to find New Zealand making lower financial contributions this year are the Commonwealth Secretariat and United Nations agencies.
