Big win to Mairehau
The Mairehau boys and girls basketball teams made a fine i start in defence of their NewZealand secondary schools titles When they both scored resounding wins in the Canterbury regional qualifying tournament at Cowles Stadium. The boys crushed Timaru 8.H.5.. 62-10, and were equally impressive in overwhelming Bumside. 89-38. John Caldwell, the Mairehau captain, was in excellent touch and totalled 24 points for his team. Mairehau also dominated the girls’ matches. Hagley was thrashed, 98-13, and Aranui fared little better when it was beaten. 74-22. Both Mairehau teams combined splendidly and the players shot accurately. The winners of the semi-finals this afternoon qualify for the national finals next month; the boys at Rotorua and the girls at Invercargill. Results:
