Tension at the top
Tension is mounting in the Broadlands Southern z League soccer contest, with the three title-chasing clubs all winning on Saturday and the fourth losing. Invercargill Thistle went down, 2-3, to Mosgiel at Dunedin in the round’s major surprise. Mosgiel, until then the bottom club, now climbs above Western. The other surprise was Roslyn’s home defeat by Shamrock, which now pushes the Christchurch club well clear of the bottom three.
Technical retained the competition lead, beating Cashmere, 3-0, from Dunedin City on goal average. City beat Western, 3-1, at Christchurch, and Rangers kept in touch by defeating Woolston, 2-0.
Christchurch United maintained its lead on goal average in the qualifying division with an emphatic victory over Timaru City, but both its rivals won. Results were:— Rangiora 2. Halswell United 4; Nomads United 0, New Brighton 1; High School Old Boys 1, Papanui Suburbs 3; Burndale United 2, Riccarton W.M.C. 1; Christchurch United 6, Timaru City 0; Northern Hearts 2, University 0.
