Higher prices for Herefords
Several of the best quality bulls reached or bettered $1(1110 at the annual South Island Hereford sale at Timaru From an offering of 77 lots. 59 were sold for an average of $547, compared with $417 for 107 sold last year. Buyers sought buUs with good conformation and sound in the feet. Bulls which measured up to these requirements sold well; others had much more limited demand. The top price of the sale was $1350, paid by Cashmere Estate (Christchurch), for one of two from the Beachcroft Stud (Southbridge >. J. R. Sutherland (Omaramai, showed the winning bull when the animals were judged before the sale. The bull was subsequently bought by Ferguson Farms 'Rossi for $lO5O. For his offering of eight, Mr Sutherland averaged $750. Other sales included eight from the Waratah Stud
(Fairlie), at an average of J 547. to ppnce being $900; three from J. F. G. Blakely and Son (Waikari), at 5650 "to $lOOO, averaging $850; seven from A. D. IL Scott iCoalgatei. at s22a to $lOOO, averaging $489; four from A. Gillespie (Waimatei. at $350 tn $lOOO, averaging $850; and two from A. McKerchar (tavei. at $7OO. SHORTHORN SALE Buyers and the pre-»al» judge found themselves in agreement at the South Island Beef Shorthorn Mie. also held at Timaru. last week. The champion bull in the offering duly fetched the top price of the sale. $lOOO. It was offered on account of the Weldon Partnership, of Scar gillFor 31 bulls sold at auction the average was $549. a rise of $42 on last vear. The best of the entry sold steadilv at $B5O to $B5O. and others at $lO9 to $450.
