Sports ties with S. Africa

Since December last year sports teams from 22 countries have toured South Africa, according to a Press Association report from Montreal. In the same period, South African sports teams or individual sportsmen have competed in 14 countries. Details of sporting contacts between South Africa and the rest of the world from December last until the end of April are: December, 1975 National equestrian championships: Britain, West Germany. National gliding: West Germany, Rhodesia. National schools’ baseball: Belgium. January, 1976 National power boating: West Germany, Austria, England, the Netherlands. Derek Robins’ cricket team played; also a club cricket team from Holland. National golf: Britain. National baseball: U.S.A. National schools’ rowing: England. February National gymnastics: Taiwan, U.S.A., Finland, Britain, Sweden. World bowls: Australia, England, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Jersey, Malawi, New Zealand, Rhodesia, Scotland, Wales. Western Samoa, U.S.A. March Rugby at club level: U.S.A. Eastern Unions team, the Eagles played a series of matches. National tennis: West Germany.

National soccer: Argentina. Karate: Japan and Britain. Horse gymkhana: Australia, Israel. England. The international Wanderers cricket team, comprising mainly Australians, English men and two New Zealand ers, played a series of matches. Athletics, national meeting. U.S.A., Britain, Belgium. Cycling: Scotland. The U.S.A, gymnastics team will be touring South Africa at the end of August. Countries where South African individuals or teams have played recently are. December Golf: Thailand. Polo: El Salvador. Soccer: Rhodesia. Tennis: U.S.A. Hockey: Britain, Spam, Belgium. Speed skating: Italy, West Germany. Wrestling: U.S.A. January’ Athletics team in Britain, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands. Squash: England. Softball: New Zealand. Angling (inter-provincial): Mauritius. Hockey (national schools tour): Spain. Wrestling: U.S.A. February’ Badminton: European tour. Golf: U.S.A. Tennis: U.S.A. Weightlifting: Taiwan. Softball: Rhodesia. A number of South Africans competed at the Al! England tennis championships at Wimbledon.
