“Massacre”

Sir, — Like the writer of the item for young readers, I was taught at school about the Wairau “massacre.” j oday the memorial at the site commemorates the Wairau “incident”, and the New Zealand Encyclopaedia refers to the Wairau "affray”. I suggest either word is more neutral and in keeping with the over-all tone of the item, which attempts to present a much more balanced description of misunderstanding, accident and greed than I was given at school. Incidentally both the memorial and the encyclopaedia mention that Maoris also were killed at the Wairau Incident. — Yours, etc.. BRIAN EASTON. June 16, 1976.
