P.M. ‘must face airport issue’
The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) could not "wash his hands” of the Christchurch International Airport expansion issue, the member of Parliament tor Wigram (Mr M. A. Connelly) said last evening. "Clearly, the hands ot the Minister of Transport are tied,” Mr Connelly said. "The Government’s decision to curtail work on preliminary drawings approved by the Labour Government is a bad decision." He said that ample funds for the overseas lounge drawings were held in the Government and City Council account, “It is time that the public woke up to the Government’s talk about New Zealand being in an economic crisis,” Mr Connelly added. "The economv is on the upswing, in spite of the Government’s policy. The crisis is a credibility crisis, with the Government’s credibility at stake. “Why is the Government seemingly so determined either to destroy, or to stop, development of the transport arteries of the South Island, including those like the
Christchurch Airport, which has the potential to service international travel and earn vital overseas funds?” he asked.
