Two riders not going to Olympics

PA Wellington Two of the New Zealand equestrian team named to compete in the jumping competition at the Montreal Olympics will now not be travelling to Canada. This was announced by the Council of the New Zealand Horse Society in a letter sent to the New Zealand Olympic Association yesterday. The two remaining riders Joe Yorke, of Bulls, and Harvey Wilson, of Taranaki, will compete, but there will be only one horse for them to ride — Big Red.

In the letter the Horse Society said that following a fall-off in form during midApril by horses in the New Zealand equestrian team currently competing in the United Kingdom, it was discovered that long-distance travel by jet aircraft led to horses developing a blood condition.

“The president of the New Zealand Horse Society, Mrs Mary Dailey, who has just returned from England, has reported that in the best veterinary opinion, Big Red is the only horse in the team which is in good enough condition to compete at Montreal,” the society advised. It was the decision of the council of the society that Yorke and Wilson should be the riders. They will be accompanied by Messrs I. A. Nimon (Napier) as manager and L. Richards (Taupo) as trainer with Mrs K. Yorke as groom.

The two riders not going are John Cottle (Wellington) and Stuart Mitchell (Poverty Bay).

Suspended.—A. Guiney (New Brighton, second grade) was suspended for two Saturdays when he appeared before the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, after being ordered off last Saturday for an alleged stiff-arm tackle.

Rugby — The Ail Black wing, Grant Batty, now of Tauranga, has officially notified the national selectors that he is not available for the New Zealand v. Ireland test on June 5.
