Squash upset Break does Skurr good
(By
TIM DUNBAR)
Lawrence Skurr showed the benefits of a week "away from it ail" when he upset Rod Hayes (Christchurch B) in the second round of the A grade squash competition last evening. The High School Old Boys B player, back from a week mustering in the fresh mountain air. played with considerable vigour and always had a slight edge over a seemingly uninterested Hayes. Hayes, who has recently returned from a trip to Pakistan with a second-string New Zealand team, said that he had played eight weeks of squash without a break and the loss “had to happen” eventually. An interested observer of the five-game match was the Wellington player, Tony Naughton, who thrashed Hayes in the final of the Nelson open last weekend. H© acted as umpire. It was the first time for about a year that Skurr had got the better of Hayes. Skurr deservedly won the New World “player of the week” award but another young player who deserved to be' commended for his efforts was thp 19-year-old Paul McFadzien (Christchurch A). McFadzien inflicted the second successive defeat in five games on the very experienced Old Boys A player, Viv Hargreaves, who bowed under his opponent’s
pressure and lost three points in a row with shots into the tin plate late in the fifth. Old Boys, strongly favoured to win the competition, suffered its second successive humiliating defeat and has still failed to gain a point. Yesterday it was without its top player, Barry* McNeil, and its No. 3, John Tolchard. In the other match Christchurch C had a convincing K-2 win over Sumner but the contest was still notable for two very interesting games. Bruce Trangmar had his work cut out to beat the ever-thinking veteran Les Milne, in five and Roger Monk played some very determined squash to beat Ron Marshall in another match that went the full distance. The women’s games all went as expected, with Burnside A, High School Old Boys and ChrisV church all securing easy wins. MEN Christchurch A 10, High School Old Boys A 0 P. G. McFadzien beat V. J.
