Subsidy for rental flats
A Housing Corporation subsidy of $126,000 for a Christchurch City Council rental housing project for tile elderly was announced yesterday by the Minister of Housing (Mr Gair). It is for 13 single-person units in St John Street. Mr Gair said that the cost of the project would exceed $170,000. The balance of the cost above the subsidy would be met by a corporation loan. This meant that the Government would pay the full cost of building the flats.
The City Council’s property officer, Mr R. A. Schultz, said last evening that work would begin almost immediately.
Approval was also being sought for money to build another 90 flats, and the Council was planning for about 300 more flats during this financial year, he said.
During the last financial year 199 flats were paid for by the Government at a cost of about $13,500 each, he said.
