Geraldine supports new bus
An application by the Minister of Railways to replace the ChristchurchDunedin and DunedinChristchurch railcar services with new road passenger services, will be heard by the No. 10 Licensing Authority in Dunedin this morning, and the Geraldine Borough Council last night had information that the application was likely to be opposed. The council agreed to send a telegram supporting the Railways application unless the Authority had before it evidence of the ability of any other source of road passenger transport to provide a better service for Geraldine.
Councillors made it clear they would like a service that called at Geraldine to pick up and set down passengers. The Mayor (Mr W. S. Aitken), said that bus services called at Waimate to pick up and set down passengers, but Geraldine w r as by-passed by most buses.
Geraldine people wanting to travel by the Midland bus to Dunedin had to go by car to Timaru, and those travelling from Christchurch had to return the extra 24 miles from Timaru by car. The Town Clerk (Mr B. O. Jones): “The bus replacing the railcar will stop to pick up and set down passengers at Orari, which is four miles from Geraldine.”
