Washington litter control study

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. The New Zealand Soft Drink and Cordial Manufacturers’ Association has announced in New Plymouth that it will send a representative to the United States to investigate environmental control in the state of Washington.

The Washington State

method of environmental I control puts a levy on packing materials at their source of supply. The money gained is administered by a commission representative of both manufacturers and the; Government to effectively control the disposal of such packaging. In this way, in effect, people pay for the litter they produce. It is generally recognised that litter is “a people problem.” and the association decided that the com-! munity as well as manufac-; turers should be involved actively in environmental! [control. A spokesman for the asso- [ ciation said that soft drink I sellers were often blamed for the litter problem. “Environmental studies made in Wellington have proved that [ [paper and plastics and other I materials disposed of by the ■community are by far greater pollutants,” he said.
