Bigger litter control grant

(N.Z. Press Association f WELLINGTON, May 5. The Litter Control Council has been granted an increase of $5OOO from the Lottery Board of Control. Announcing this in a speech to the annual meeting of the council in Wellington today, the Undersecretary of Internal Affairs (Mr Comber), said the council would now receive $30,000 from the board. The increased grant had been made despite the atmosphere of financial stringency and “1 hope that your continuing programme of public education will be made all the more effective because of it.” Mr Comber said it cost about $6 million a year to dispose of litter — about $2 a head of the population. Paper, or products predominately of paper, made up 43 per cent of the nation's litter, and close to half came from the consumption of tobacco. “Should the producers of some of these products be prevailed upon to make their contributions to the cause of 'litter control,” Mr Comber asked.
