Betham to defend title in Trinidad

(N.Z. Press Association} WELLINGTON. Auckland’s Monty Betham will defend his Commonwealth professional middle-weight boxing title in Trinidad on July 30. Betham’s manager. Mr R. Jones, confirmed in Wellington yesterday that the bout will be against Carlos Marks, from whom the title was won in Wellington last year. Mr Jones said that he believed that Betham’s net purse for the contest, $lO,OOO, would be the largest received by a New Zealander for a Commonwealth title bout. While Betham had not been given offers to meet New Zealanders, many were pouring in from overseas. “At the moment, Betham is rated eighth in the world.” Mr Jones said.
