Using a two-fisted backhand, the former all-Ameri-can Rice University student, Harold Solomon, upset Arthur Ashe in the first quar-ter-final of the $lOO,OOO World Championship of Tennis tournament, eliminating him 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Ashe, who had lost only three of 29 matches played on the W.C.T. circuit this ; year, was favoured to win this year’s title, thereby tak- . ing the championship for the ' second year in succession.
