No recovery yet from trade drop
Trade through Lyttelton has yet to show any recovery from the general downward trend experienced over the last six months. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail) said yesterday that trade for the last six months was down nearly 200,000 tonnes on the same period last year. Imports have been worst hit. both coastal and overseas being 206.694 tonnes down. However exports, particularly in primary products such as dairy goods, tallow, wool and hides, continue at previous levels, he said. Coastal trade continues to be a problem — the WellingtonLyttelton trade having suffered the most. Mr McPhail said that if the Rangatira were withdrawn the board would not be in a happy position. However he said he hoped over-all trade would stabilise during the next six months and perhaps start picking up again. ARRIVALS Recife Maru (5.58 a.m.), Wellington (Seatrans).
